Biography

Combining brilliant command of the instrument with rare musicality, pianist Zheyu (Crystal) Jiang is one of the most promising young pianists of her generation.  

As a result of winning the gold medal at the 70th Wideman International Piano Competition, Crystal is invited to open the season of the Marshall Symphony in Texas, with beloved Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.2 — a performance that was broadcasted live through Red River radio; and to close the season, with the monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 by Prokofiev, of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. During the 2022-23 season, Crystal Jiang also performed at the Seventeenth Church in Chicago, which was broadcasted live on Chicago’s Classical Radio Streaming Station Wfmt; at the St. Marks Cathedral in Shreveport, as part of the Masterpiece Series; in Santa Cruz at the Distinguished Artists Series; in Ashland, Oregon at the Tutunov Piano Series, with an interview held at the Jefferson Public Radio Station. In 2022, Crystal won the grand prize at the 78th Naftzger Young Artists Competition. In April 2023, Crystal Jiang released her first album Crystallised on major streaming sites including Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music. Following her recent success in the US as well as abroad, Crystal was invited to perform in Israel, Austria, and France, and to record her debut album for the prestigious music label company Naxos in 2024.

Highlights of the 2021-22 season include a performance with the Symphony of Westchester playing the rarely performed Mozart Piano Concerto k. 459, numerous performances at the "Lieven International Piano Foundation Summer Concerts", at the Bösendorfer Salon in Vienna, at the Abbey Bach Festival in Oregon, and over a dozen concerts and lectures at the Emerald Coast Music Alliance in Florida - a festival dedicated to bringing music to populations with less access and means. Crystal also made her Chicago debut at the "Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series”, as well as her New York recital debut as part of the prestigious “Salon di Virtuosi” in early 2022. She also performed in Berlin at the “Piano Salon Christophori” concert series, and a series of recitals in Israel, including Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos (k. 365), with the Tel Aviv Soloist Ensemble and pianist Alon Goldstein under the baton of Barak Tal in Akko, Israel.

In the past, Crystal has held solo recitals in major concert halls including China National Center of Performing Arts, Wuhan Huangzhong Concert Hall, Henan Opera House, and Vienna’s Musikverein. She performed Prokofiev 3rd Piano Concerto with the Oberlin Orchestra in 2019 as well as Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto with the UMKC orchestra to critical acclaim as a result of winning both concerto competitions.

     

As a young pianist of the new age, Crystal has been active in music programs and outreach activities. Crystal was invited to participate in the Lieven International Piano Foundation at Musikverein in Vienna in February 2020 and has worked as the supervisor for the foundation for two years. In 2019, she started two local monthly concert series in Kansas City, and acted and produced music videos on social platforms. She organized and conducted a student-run orchestra when she was studying at the Oberlin Conservatory.

Crystal’s educational background includes graduating from the Middle & High School Attached to the Central Conservatory of Music in China, studying under Shanshan Yang; the Oberlin Conservatory under Peter Takács; UMKC Conservatory under Alon Goldstein; Peabody Institute under Yonghi Moon; and now is pursuing a Doctorate Degree of Musical Arts under Hieyon Choi at Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, USA.
